Rivercruise: Historical city tour
The best way to explore Berlin is from the water! It might be surprising, but Berlin has over 240 kilometres of waterways and more bridges than Venice, making it perfect for exploring from the river. On the one-hour boat tour by Stern und Kreisschiffahrt along the Spree, you’ll enjoy a relaxed journey through both historic and modern Berlin.
During the tour, you’ll experience impressive views of Berlin’s famous landmarks, including Museum Island, the Reichstag, the House of World Cultures, and many other highlights along the Spree. A German-speaking guide and a 12-language audio guide on board provide fascinating insights into Berlin’s history, allowing you to sit back and enjoy the stunning views along the riverbanks.

This time we opted to try the 7 lakes tour out of Wansee rather than Spree city cruises. Blessed we a lovely sunny and warm day and a quite full boat. We enjoyed the easy cruising through the much more residential landscape on outer reaches of the city. Drinks and some food available on board, along with some German only commentary. Nice alternate tour option if visiting Berlin. Easy to get to on S1 line to Potsdam/Wansee.
We were pleasantly surprised by the trip as it stated on our ticket the tour did not include a guide or any commentary. However, the captain of the boat did a vey good job commenting on the different landmarks we passed during our 7-lakes-trip. It really is a beautiful trip from the Wannsee to Babelsberg- almost reaching Potsdam and then returning to the pier at Wannsee. The only thing we found strange was that we were not told before the trip about the option to get off the boat at the different stops and then resume the ride. They could have sold a lot more drinks and food on the trip if the waiter had not only come by once asking us if we wanted to order anything. Maybe the company could set up a menu in different places of the boat and take orders throughout the trip.
We had pre-booked for a Friday morning at 11.30am on our last day in Berlin. It was a large boat that could hold quite a lot of passengers but it seemed that we were joined by a large Italian tour group who were extremely noisy, so much so that if I could have understood the German commentary that was on, I wouldn’t have been able to hear it! The tour lasted 1 hour and went up the river and you could see the sights from a different angle. The seats were set around tables for about eight people. You could buy food and drinks on board for decent prices and there were toilets available.
We went on a 2hr round trip from Jannowitzbruecke up the Spree. The boat was excellent - I think electric so very quiet and no diesel fumes. Seeing Berlin from the boat was fascinating, especially as the river formed part of the east west border, so different architecture etc on each side. It would definitely have been 5 out of 5 if the cafe/bar staff had been even a tiny bit friendly. The lady was completely disinterested, unresponsive, unhelpful. Bought beers, and when I asked for glasses she seemed annoyed, and initially tried to give me small tumblers. One of our group later bought an ice cream, and the allegedly didn't have change for €5 for a €3.50 lolly, so they kept 50c. Wouldn't have minded this if they were friendly and helpful, but as it was, it seemed like they were forcing being tipped. However, the boat trip itself I'd highly recommend, and hopefully staff are in a better mood!
